Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur, India

Among the legendary hotels, there are some that are truly unrivaled, absolutely unmissable, and utterly magical. This is certainly true of the Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur. The Taj hotel chain has a large number of properties in India, as well as in the United States and Dubai, among other locations. However, the Taj Lake Palace remains a true gem, single-handedly inspiring countless travel dreams. Owned by the highly regarded Leading Small Hotels, the Taj Lake Palace immediately stands out as the ideal destination for a honeymoon or a romantic getaway.

Yes, this palace once hosted a maharaja, and yes, you might find yourself getting swept up in the experience: everything is designed to make you feel as though you’ve left the 21st century, everyday life, and everything that goes with it behind. Let go—now’s the time. Situated right in the middle of a lake, the Taj Lake Palace could almost pass for a mirage.

With 66 rooms and 17 suites to choose from, which one should you pick for a truly exceptional experience? We have a soft spot for the «Royal Suites.» Ranging from about 50 to 60 m², they’re relatively spacious, and they all offer a stunning panoramic view. Each of these suites has its own unique features, and we particularly love the Sandhya Royal Suite, which offers the perfect vantage point for watching the sunsets. Do you prefer the Rang Mahal? That’s understandable—it has its own private jacuzzi!

Once you’ve settled in at the Taj Lake Palace, you’re of course free to just relax and admire the view, but you should also know that the hotel invites you to book day trips and enjoy beautiful cruises on Lake Pichola. And since dining is undoubtedly a key part of any trip, you’ll be pleased to know that the Taj Lake Palace features no fewer than four different restaurants. From the most laid-back to the most elegant, you can choose between a gourmet meal, Asian tapas, or more European-style cuisine. And if you’re dreaming of a romantic dinner for two, you can, of course, opt for in-room dining.

In a nutshell

  • A royal welcome in a dream setting.
  • A truly magical place that once belonged to a maharaja.
  • All of the royal suites offer panoramic views.

Dining: Bhairo Restaurant at the Taj Lake Palace

Your hotel has four restaurants, including a very elegant one, the Neel Kamal, and a rooftop restaurant: the Bhairo. We love the latter for its location and, of course, its panoramic view. It’s open from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and you can even ask to have breakfast there. The menu features mostly European cuisine, and the atmosphere is fairly relaxed.

With the kids

Children have access to the pool from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. These time slots are a bit short to really enjoy it.

Show them around the city and plan some excursions.

Udaipur has a lot to offer in terms of sightseeing and a change of scenery. Rather than attempting a solo tour that’s as haphazard as it is vague, let your hotel arrange excursions that truly suit your interests. Don’t miss the two museums: the Bagore Ki Haveli Museum and the City Palace Museum.

Zen
The Taj Lake Palace Spa, the Jiva Spa, is a delightful oasis of relaxation. The spa features two private treatment rooms and one room for couples’ treatments. We love the signature treatments: the Jivaniya This 2-hour break will give you a chance to recharge.

Depending on the season, and generally speaking: from the’mosquito repellent, your medications, and comfortable yet breathable clothing for excursions. Your hotel can provide most of the everyday items you might have forgotten.
