In Los Angeles, the 5-star hotel is a genre unto itself, with its century-old luxury hotels, celebrity bungalows, and rooftops overlooking the hills. Here are 5 places to stay between the ocean, the Golden Triangle, and the Hollywood Hills.
A perfect day in Los Angeles might look something like this: waking up to a view of the Pacific Ocean, a morning yoga session on a rooftop, lunch under the umbrellas in Beverly Hills, an aperitivo as the sky turns crimson, and then one last drink on the Sunset Strip. These 5-star hotels in Los Angeles Each one tells the story of an hour of that day and a different facet of the city. From the oldest resident celebrating her 100th birthday to the latest in California design, we’re opening the doors for you.
Hotel Casa del Mar: A Century of Views of the Pacific
Casa del Mar—«the house of the sea»—truly lives up to its name: only the boardwalk running along Santa Monica Beach separates its Renaissance Revival façade from the sand. This Santa Monica hotel is celebrating its centennial throughout 2026, and it looks its best: We settle into the Lobby Lounge for a cocktail accompanied by live music, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean, before heading over for dinner at Terrazza, where the Mediterranean-Californian menu can be enjoyed while watching the last surfers of the evening. Reopening in late May for the summer season, the Patio del Mar sets up its tables right on the waterfront. Spritz, seafood, and a guaranteed sunset are the only items on its beach vacation.
Mornings here set the tone for the entire stay: breakfast with a view of the Pacific, followed by a ride on a beach bike provided by the hotel along the path leading to Venice, a private surf or yoga lesson on the sand, and a return stop at the Sea Wellness Spa to unwind after the session. A neighbor and sister property to Shutters on the Beach, this spot has a more intimate vibe, making it ideal for couples. The hotel proudly lives up to its reputation as’romantic hotel, from romantic getaways to sunrises over the bay.

Santa Monica Proper, Kelly Wearstler's Wellness Lab
A hand-carved reception desk with shell-like contours, an oak floor whose octagonal pattern resembles a beach umbrella seen from above: right from the lobby, designer Kelly Wearstler sets the tone for this Proper hotel located at 700 Wilshire Boulevard, in a 1920s building extended by a contemporary wing. The 262 rooms and suites feature curved windows, sandy textures, and garden terraces designed for the golden hour; the new Wellness Rooms include Eight Sleep smart bedding and air and water purification systems. The hotel has been awarded a Michelin Key.
Wellness here is a comprehensive program: Ayurvedic treatments at the Surya Spa, a Recovery Suite with a cold bath, contrast therapy, and red light therapy, daily Pilates, yoga, tai chi, and breathwork classes, and even a VO₂ max test at the gym. Then head up to the rooftop—the only one in Santa Monica with a pool—where Calabra serves Mediterranean dishes and biodynamic wines overlooking the Pacific, while Palma provides all-day dining on the ground floor, featuring produce from the Santa Monica farmers’ market and a menu free of seed oils. The Beverly Hills Hotel, the legendary pink palace
The banana leaves on the Martinique wallpaper—designed in 1942 and installed in the hotel during the 1949 renovation—still adorn the walls—and the whole world has been copying them ever since. That speaks to the aura of the «Pink Palace,» which opened in 1912 on Sunset Boulevard—even before Beverly Hills was a city—and is now the American flagship of the Dorchester Collection. Nearly five hectares of tropical gardens shield the main building’s guest rooms and the famous bungalows from the boulevard, while the pool lined with cabanas remains the setting where Hollywood has been sunbathing for generations. The Michelin Guide awards it three Keys.
When lunchtime rolls around, it’s quite a ritual. At the Polo Lounge, beneath the green-and-white striped ceiling, producers negotiate in hushed tones on the booths—the place was nicknamed «Hollywood’s cafeteria»—and Sunday jazz brunch takes place on the terrace, complete with a pianist. Meanwhile, the counter at the Fountain Coffee Room has been serving slices of apple pie since 1949, and the Cabana Cafe lets you linger by the pool. Dress code required: here, you dress up to sit down for a meal.

The Maybourne Beverly Hills: The Spirit of London Under the Palm Trees
We walk across the lawns of Beverly Canyon Gardens, with the sound of a fountain in the background, and step through the doors of the most “London-esque” hotel in California: The Maybourne belongs to the same group as Claridge’s, The Connaught, and The Berkeley—even its tea time, the “Prêt-à-Portea,” is a haute couture take on the British afternoon tea. Just one block from Rodeo Drive, the hotel boasts a distinguished 5-star rating from Forbes Travel Guide, a museum-worthy art collection, and one of the largest spas in Los Angeles. Suite guests even have access to BMW i7 sedans to explore the city.
Late afternoon is its prime time. The Terrace sets up its white umbrellas facing the gardens, in the style of a European piazza, serving Mediterranean appetizers and homemade pasta during the golden hour; On the ninth floor, Dante Beverly Hills—the New York bar’s first West Coast outpost—serves aperitivo cocktails by the pool, with a panoramic view of the Hollywood Hills as a bonus. And when the evening cools down, the Maybourne Bar brings out its selection of whiskies from the Highlands, Japanese distilleries, and bourbons.

The Sun Rose West Hollywood, a night on the Sunset Strip
With 149 rooms and suites, two Wolfgang Puck restaurants, an Art Deco bar, a 100-seat concert hall, a bowling alley, and a rooftop pool, the Pendry occupies an entire city block on the Sunset Strip along Sunset Boulevard. Interior designer Martin Brudnizki reimagines Hollywood’s golden age in a vibrant, color-saturated style, and right from the lobby, Anthony James’s sculpture “Portal Icosahedron” draws the eye into its kaleidoscope of steel and glass. This venue, which opened in 2021, has been awarded two Michelin Keys and is the most nightlife-oriented option in our selection.
Wolfgang Puck is behind both restaurants: on the ground floor, Ospero offers a chic neighborhood eatery experience, complete with a wood-fired pizza oven and a pastry counter; on the eleventh floor, Merois blends Japanese, Southeast Asian, and Franco-Californian cuisines against a panoramic view stretching from Downtown to the hills. We finish up at the blue-and-gold Bar Pendry, a final drink in hand as the Strip lights up below—that’s exactly why we booked this time slot.
