Vegueta - Gran Canaria
For whom?
For those who enjoy immersing themselves in history without sacrificing comfort, who prefer discretion over ostentation, and who are connoisseurs of starred restaurants.
The pitch:
To the north of Gran Canaria, nestled between the marina and the historic Vegueta district, the archipelago's historical showcase, this iconic establishment, built in 1890 by British architect James MacLaren and expanded in 1951 by Miguel Martín-Fernández de la Torre, is the oldest 5-star hotel in the Canary Islands and the archipelago's first hotel. With a touch of Mudejar style, evident in its two minarets, and punctuated by intricately carved wooden balconies, the hotel, part of the Royal Hideaway Hotel collection from the Barceló hotel group, is a listed local historical monument. Featuring marble and wood paneling, the 204 rooms exude classic elegance, enlivened by a baroque mirror.
The gastronomic offering is worthy of the setting, notably through the Poemas restaurant – a Michelin star – whose dishes were imagined by two Canarian chefs, the Padrón brothers, complemented by the green-starred table of Chef Borja Marrero, also Canarian, for delicately reinterpreted tapas at the 1890, La Bodeguita table.
