China never ceases to amaze us, as dream hotels are beginning to spring up all over the country. A 30-minute drive from Shuangliu International Airport, Diaoyutai Boutique Hotel It stands out as a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. We chose it not only because it is undoubtedly one of those hotels that will continue to be talked about for a long time to come, but also—and above all—for its superb interior design.

After a six-year construction project led by a French architect, the hotel has opened its doors and now welcomes visitors from around the world: consisting of two buildings, the Diaoyutai Boutique Hotel Chengdu has 60 rooms and is located in the heart of the historic district.

Just a few months after opening, the Diaoyutai Boutique Hotel Chengdu had already established itself as a totally trendy spot where everyone wanted to be seen. The lobby’s impressive, massive, ultra-stylish birdcages are the talk of the town. The furnishings combine clean lines with colors and textures that invite comfort and relaxation. The hotel thus attracts a clientele that appreciates being pampered: a restaurant, private lounges, a French patisserie… it has it all.

One thing you’re sure to love during your stay at the Diaoyutai Boutique Hotel Chengdu is the chance to enjoy a haven of comfort, tranquility, and elegance from the moment you step into your suite. Admire the attention to detail and let yourself be enchanted by the luxurious materials. Surrounded by fabrics featuring Chinese motifs and iroko wood, you’ll lose track of time as you revel in a warm, deliciously scented bath.

In a nutshell

  • A hotel located a 30-minute drive from Shuangliu International Airport.
  • A small number of rooms for a cozy stay.
  • A super-trendy and cozy decor.

Dining: Chen Mapo Tofu (Luomashi)

If you want to experience what “traditional” really means, head to the Chen Mapo Tofu (Luomashi) restaurant. You can’t miss out on THE city’s most famous dish, Mapo Tofu—a mix of tofu, meat, and scallions cooked with oil, black beans, soy sauce, and spicy sauce.

The restaurant is considered the gold standard in this field, and people come from far and wide to order the house specialty.

Inspiration

Shopping
Let's leave the huge shopping malls behind and head to Jinli. Surrounded by buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, this street is the perfect place to discover small stalls where you can enjoy a traditional quick lunch or pick up some slightly kitschy souvenirs.

Out for a walk
You simply can't miss a visit to the Wolong National Nature Reserve. Located about 100 kilometers from Chengdu, it is home to the Wolong Giant Panda Research Center, among other attractions.

Zen
We choose the hotel's spa The Temple House, MI XUN, to enjoy a truly incredible experience. Between the pool and the little café tucked away in an inner courtyard, you’ll come to understand what it means to pamper yourself.

In the suitcase
If you're visiting in the summer, be sure to pack not only light clothing but also rain gear. Don't forget to bring gloves and a hat in the winter, since it gets cold there. You'll find plenty of panda earmuffs there!
