A UNESCO World Heritage site, this Tibetan edifice has long symbolized the power of the Tibetan people and had multiple functions: a major site for ceremonies, the seat of the Tibetan government, and the residence of Dalai Lama and his court.

It stands on Marpo Ri hill and overlooks the entire valley. It houses palaces, castles, and monasteries, each of remarkable sumptuousness. Nestled at an altitude of 3700 meters, the Potala Palace is steeped in a rich historical, cultural, and religious past spanning several centuries.

Although it may seem insurmountable to climb, you can access this complex via an immense staircase that ascends the hill and splits into two parts: one leads up towards the White Palace, and the other towards the Red Palace.

The White Palace is mainly dedicated to the residential quarters of the Dalai Lama. As for the Red Palace, it houses ceremonial halls, several libraries and chapels, as well as meditation rooms and the funerary chambers of eight Dalai Lamas.

We highly recommend going up to the roof to enjoy a splendid view of the valley and the old town!
