Today, we are asking travel questions to Thomas Despin, founder of Startup Cycling. For a few months now, Thomas has been traveling from country to country by bike, meeting with startup creators and learning more about their projects. We loved the concept and wanted to know more about this man from Bordeaux who seems unstoppable.
Travellers Society : For you, traveling is synonymous with...Freedom, encounters, and learning.
JR : QWhat is the first item you pack in your suitcase? Why?I don't have a suitcase when I travel because I travel by bike. But the first item I took with me was my tent. Because it's my primary mode of accommodation.
JR : When you travel in dreams, where do you go?On the road, all around the world, through Asia and the United States.
JR : Your worst travel memory?It was in Sweden, one day when I decided to use Google Maps GPS for directions, and it took me onto an old forest road on my bike... Which actually turned out to have become a swamp since then. I found myself with mud up to my knees and almost never managed to get my bike out of there (it weighs 60kg with the luggage, you know).
JR : A fragrance that invites you to escape?Citrus fruits and peppermint.
JR : What is your next destination?I am currently on the road between Tallinn and Riga. I will then go to Latvia. After that, I will go to Poland, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary...
JR : What is your favorite hotel? For what reasons?I never sleep in hotels. I prefer my tent (a 0-star hotel, but always with me).
I don't fly. But if I recall correctly, the last time I flew, I spent the journey reading a book and listening to music after trying to get two meal trays.
JR : Your best travel memory from when you were a child?I traveled very little as a child. I remember a few ski trips, but nothing memorable.
JR : You feel at home when you are...On the road or in small towns.
