Dream Golf Courses in Mauritius: 5 Courses Set Amid the Ocean, Mountains, and Elegance
June 4, 2025 Pauline

Nestled in the heart of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius reveals its idyllic beaches, turquoise lagoons, and exclusive luxury hotels… This little volcanic gem, which over the years has become a premier golf destination, offers spectacular scenery, lush vegetation, and a mild climate year-round. The island serves as a natural playground for some of the most renowned golf course designs. Set between lagoons and mountains, Mauritian courses rival one another in beauty and technical challenge, blending with rare elegance into the tropical environment. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or an amateur seeking a getaway, these five exceptional courses promise a unique experience that blends sport, nature, and the art of living…

Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club: The Most Iconic

Probably the most famous and the spectacular journey of Golf in Mauritius ! Accessible only by boat, the Île aux Cerfs Golf Club is located on a private island off the east coast, across from Trou d’Eau Douce Beach. Designed by Bernhard Langer, this 18-hole, par-72 course covers 38 hectares, winding through mangroves, volcanic rocks, and natural bunkers, with breathtaking views of the lagoon. Each hole seems to be carved into the landscape, with special attention paid to the environment. Highly technical—particularly due to the shifting winds—the course demands precision and strategy.

The must-see? An elegant clubhouse and a golf school round out the experience, just a few minutes by water shuttle from Touessrok, one of the most beautiful Hotels in Mauritius.

Heritage Golf Club: Where Nature Meets Excellence

Located in the southwestern part of the island, within the vast Bel Ombre estate, the Heritage Golf Club stands out for its two courses: the historic «Le Château» course and, since 2023, the brand-new «La Réserve Golf Links.» The first, designed by Peter Matkovich, winds through former sugarcane fields at the foot of the Frédérica Nature Reserve, set in a lush landscape, and is renowned for the quality of its maintenance and its accessible yet challenging layout. The second, designed in collaboration with Louis Oosthuizen, has established itself as the very first links course in the Indian Ocean, featuring a spectacular layout nestled among hills and offering panoramic ocean views.

Good to know? This is a very challenging course, designed for experienced players. The Château’s clubhouse, housed in a 19th-century colonial mansion, offers a refined setting where you can relax after your round and enjoy a different kind of weekend at the beach

Anahita Golf Club: Sophistication by the Lagoon

Across from Île aux Cerfs, on the east coast, the Anahita course winds its way through meticulously manicured fairways in the heart of a luxury residential community. Designed by Ernie Els, this 18-hole, par-72 course stretches 6,828 meters, making it one of the longest on the island. Bordered by the lagoon and dotted with tall tropical trees, it features exceptional flow, wide fairways, and six holes along the coast—among the most photogenic on the island. The serene setting, combined with top-notch service and an exclusive atmosphere, makes it a must-visit destination.

Where should we stay? The’luxury hotel near the golf course, the Four Seasons Resort Mauritius, located just a short walk away, rounds out the experience with its villas, spa, and marina. A must-visit for golf enthusiasts seeking tranquility and sophistication.

Avalon Golf Estate: Fresh Air at High Altitude

At 500 meters above sea level, on the highlands of Bois Chéri, Avalon Golf Estate stands out for its microclimate, which is cooler and greener than that of the coast. This 18-hole, par-72 course, designed by South African architect Peter Matkovich, winds through tea fields and wooded valleys, offering panoramic views of the southern part of the island and the ocean on the horizon. Technical yet accessible, the course was designed to accommodate all skill levels, featuring fast greens and strategically placed bunkers.

We love it! The contemporary clubhouse, with its restaurant panoramic views and its lounge bar, perfect for winding down at the end of the day. A lesser-known golf course, but one with undeniable charm!

Mont Choisy Le Golf: The Jewel of the North

The only true 18-hole course in the northern part of the island, located near Grand Baie and the lively beaches of Pereybère. Mont Choisy Le Golf, designed by Peter Matkovich, blends elegantly into the site of a former sugar plantation. The landscape architecture showcases the island’s endemic species and natural features: black lava, clusters of casuarina trees, ponds, and coconut groves. Relatively flat, the course seems accessible to golfers of all skill levels, while offering a few well-designed technical challenges, particularly thanks to the presence of water on several holes.

The icing on the cake? The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined, with a warm welcome and a modern clubhouse. Perfect for a round of golf at sunset, before dinner by the sea…
