Victims of their own success, Italian officials announced that they would take steps to <strong>protect<\/strong> these impressive <strong>cliffside villages\u00a0<\/strong>(source: the British daily newspaper <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/feb\/17\/italy-to-impose-limits-on-visitors-to-cinque-terre-with-tourist-ticket-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>).<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3126 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travellers-society.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/e00052053711b5feb8942ffeaf1fed50-240x360.jpg\" alt=\"e00052053711b5feb8942ffeaf1fed50\" width=\"352\" height=\"527\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Starting this summer, visitors who want to set foot there will need to plan ahead. As a result, the annual number of visitors will be set at <strong>1.5 million<\/strong>. That number may seem high, but it is well below the 2.5 million visitors recorded in 2015.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3129 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travellers-society.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/c3aaa0517a9b991162820ab7fe5fe681-240x360.jpg\" alt=\"c3aaa0517a9b991162820ab7fe5fe681\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cinque Terre is thus joining a growing list of destinations that are trying to <strong>limit the number of visitors<\/strong> tourism in their territory in order to preserve their\u00a0<strong>heritage <\/strong>as well as the<strong> local culture<\/strong>.
